The Devil In Details

      Life is a battle, a war between good and evil; or is it? Humans like things to be organized, separated, and easy to understand but unfortunately life just isn't. This desire for simplicity however, has lead to an erroneous belief that there are two camps at war with each other, with humanity in between. God is cast as the good guy, the champion of light and righteousness, valiantly battling against evil for our souls. Conversely we have Satan placed as the lord of evil, waging eternal battle for dominion. The problem with this idea is that it takes power away from God and gives way more power to Satan than he really has.

“Be careful! Watch out for attacks from the Devil, your great enemy. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for some victim to devour.”

(1 Peter 5:8)

     Satan. What do we know about him? Honestly we don't know much. He is not, however, the opposite of God. Often it seems He is portrayed as God's opposite number, the ying to His yang (or yang to His ying depending on how exactly that works). In movies like Constantine (2005) we see this played out as a cosmic battle with both sides fairly equally matched and masters of their own spiritual domain. The truth however is both far simpler and harder to accept.

     Satan is a created being, just like the angels and just like me, you, or anybody. Created as a divine being he is often called the angel of light and, like everything, was created perfect. Angels however, like humans, have a degree of free choice and Satan gave in to pride and a desire for power. He desired to be “like the most High” and coveted the throne and praise of God. Ultimately he convinced a number of other angels to join him in revolt and was summarily cast down.

(This passage is meant for the King of Tyre but is also seen as being said to Satan as well, some of the event referenced are obviously before that king existed.)

"...You were the perfection of wisdom and beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God. Your clothing was adorned with every precious stone-red carnelian, chrysolite, white moonstone, beryl, onyx, jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and emerald-all beautifully crafted for you and set in the finest gold. They were given to you on the day you were created. I ordained and anointed you as the mighty angelic guardian. You had access to the holy mountain of God and walked among the stones of fire. "You were blameless in all you did from the day you were created until the day evil was found in you. Your great wealth filled you with violence, and you sinned. So I banished you from the mountain of God. I expelled you, O mighty guardian, from your place among the stones of fire. Your heart was filled with pride becauszze of all your beauty. You corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor. So I threw you to the earth...”

(Ezekiel 28:12-17)

“Then there was war in heaven. Michael and the angels under his command fought the dragon and his angels. And the dragon lost the battle and was forced out of heaven. This great dragon-the ancient serpent called the Devil, or Satan, the one deceiving the whole world-was thrown down to the earth with all his angels. Then I heard a loud voice shouting across the heavens, "It has happened at last-the salvation and power and kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ! For the Accuser has been thrown down to earth-the one who accused our brothers and sisters before our God day and night. And they have defeated him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of their testimony. And they were not afraid to die. Rejoice, O heavens! And you who live in the heavens, rejoice! But terror will come on the earth and the sea. For the Devil has come down to you in great anger, and he knows that he has little time."

(Revelation 12:7-12)

     God you see, has no problems dealing with Satan. God does not struggle against anything nor does anything interfere with His plans. The treason of Lucifer and the evil that exists today are not an unfortunate and unseen circumstance but a part of the plan. In a way, God created evil, not that He authors it or causes it but because He made what is right. When something is defined as good, something else is automatically made that is correspondingly bad, at least in theory. When God created things outside Himself, He made the possibility of evil. The point here is that nothing is a surprise to God and nothing is out of His control. We do not find ourselves in a metaphysical war against evil, we are simply in a rather uncomfortable portion of God's great plan for eternity. No matter how dark the night may be God (who has perfect judgment) decided that it was worth it.

     Satan has no power apart from what God allows. He is not another god, he is not another power, but he is the enemy of our souls. Imagine him as a great big mean dog on a leash. If he were free he would do all sorts of harm, but he chained, and unable to go further than that chain allows. Satan is not foiling God's plans he is fulfilling them, whether he wants to or not. Also, as a created being, he is limited to his being. He is not all knowing, nor can he be everywhere. We should be wary of him for what he can do but not afraid of him for who he is. God is more powerful than any adversary and nothing -absolutely nothing- happens without His consent. We need not fear some evil shadow when we walk with the light of the world.

“Then the Devil, who betrayed them, was thrown into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur, joining the beast and the false prophet. There they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”

(Revelation 20:10)

To Know What We Can't See

It seems a bit odd to think that Christianity, with it's focus on the supernatural is quite a logical and fairly simple belief. There are very few categories of being and rather simple rules. We're not asked to perform herculean tasks nor undergo protracted journeys, we're told simply to seek out a closeness with God and to allow Him His due place in our lives. Ultimately we can see that although Christianity is a very spiritual faith, it is not a mystical one.

     The best evidence for this -I think- is the Bible. Let's just talk about it's existence for one. The Bible is the Word of God, 'God breathed' as the scriptures say. He didn't leave us without information. We needn't read tea leaves or master diving rods, learn spells or contact spirits, we have no reason to follow our instincts or intuition, we need only listen to what He has said! Read the book, we see glimpses of the past and of the future, we see the world of the spirit that is all around us, we are shown what that God is in control and that the chaotic world of other beliefs doesn't exist. Furthermore God has shown us exactly what He desires from us. Unlike other faiths where we are only told what to do, the Bible shows us a God who works with us and for us (meaning for our benefit not under our direction). We needn't fear tomorrow because He is the God of tomorrow, and today, and yesterday!

     The spiritual world, though mysterious, is also quite simple. We don't have a hierarchy of deities, we don't have various groups or beings, and we don't have several warring factions. We have God, His Angels, Satan, the Demons, and us. That is it! So many people want to make the spiritual so much more unusual and difficult, but really we have only two factions of two types of created beings. There are no other deities or powers to be concerned with and like the physical world there are only two camps: those with God and those against. Furthermore there are not mystical powers to be concerned with, objects hold no energy and can be neither good nor evil, angels and demons can only operate in prescribed manners, and with the exception of very obvious miracles God uses mostly mundane means to accomplish His goals. I understand the desire for a more “interesting” world but frankly it just isn't real.

     Reality as we see it and comprehend it falls under the same understanding of simplicity. We are not lost spiritual wanderers or recycled ghosts. We are not simple fauna animated by chance and electricity. We are not advanced animals haunted by false spiritual lies or burdened with impossible eternal purpose. We are created beings who have rebelled and are now worthy of wrath. Servants and slaves who threw off the mantle of the just King and pursued their own wicked desires. That same King who could have wiped us out and been completely justified, chose instead to save us. He chose to save us though it meant His own Son had to die. God chose to love us all, rather than kill us all.

   I want a simple life. I want to live where the only mystery is what tomorrow holds and maybe, what's for dinner. I'm so grateful we don't live in a world turned about by many a changing winds and tides, one where myriad powers vie for the control and praise of weak humanity. I'm so glad we have the path laid out for us and salvation and eternity granted to us if we would only follow. I'm glad for my God who loves me enough to die for me. I'm grateful for this simple, wonderful life.

True Good and What Matters Most -Part 2-

“My faith was threatened as I began to question what else had been wrong about what I had been taught. As I edged closer to the perimeters of the church, all the time being drawn and inspired by the beauty and unconditional love (which I was told only existed within Christianity) I saw outside of her, the light from beyond cast even more shadows on the church. Darkness existed in the forms of misogyny, empire-building, anti-intellectualism, and systematic marginalization of GLBT persons; they were injustices coated with spiritual language — wolves in sheep’s clothing. I suffered through severe storms of righteous rage. I wept with the pain of marginalized peoples against the church’s exclusion”

     I'm bothered by the phrase “what I had been taught.” A Christian is taught things, of course, but we come to know more as we commune with God in His Word. I can't really know, but it just doesn't feel like the author has a relationship with God. The language of the article speaks as if Christianity was simply an organization or a movement (She even calls it a movement at one point). Everything we see, every feeling we have, every idea that is presented to us or pops into our minds needs to be taken to Scripture and analyzed. The author constantly refers to “the church,” but doesn't ever mention the Word or God. The church, its membership, and its activities are not what we reference for truth and they are not what we hold up as our standard. God has revealed in Scripture and through His Son what we are to be. It is through that light that we look upon the world.

     “The light from beyond cast even more shadows on the church.” Satan was an angel of light, and he works in distractions and misinformation. He deals in lies and untruths. That light may cast shadows but it's a pale sickly light when understood. You say you see misogyny? The Bible speaks against that. You see 'empire-building' and 'anti-intellectualism'? God tells us to love Him with all of our mind, soul, and strength and think of others more than ourselves. You see the church marginalize the 'GLBT' folks? Well what do you mean by that? Do you mean that we exclude them from church? Do you mean that we refuse to allow what is clearly a sinful life, one repeatedly denounced by God in His word into the body of Christ? Then yes, that is there and it will remain for everyone who holds the Bible to be true. We must love these people, they are no different and no more fallen than any others but sin is sin and we do no one any favors by playing nice and trying to 'reinterpret' the Bible.

I want the pragmatic, scientific solutions for the world’s problems out there AND the earnest faith for the impossible in here. I want the big, huge tent that welcomes everyone out there AND the narrow road of life giving sacrifice in here. I want to glean the wisdom of the world AND own Jesus’ beautiful vision.”

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

“Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.”

(James 4:4)

"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

(Proverbs 9:10)

Co 1:20 Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

     What honesty does the author think she'll find in a world of lies? Not that everyone is constantly telling lies but the prince of this world is the father of lies and humans speak his native language! Furthermore that 'big, huge tent that welcomes everyone' does not welcome true Christianity, it never has. Try it, go to that tent -so to speak- join in the hand holding and smiling, and then tell everyone that there is ONE way and one way ONLY that man can be saved from his sin. Tell them that the ONE true God CONDEMNS their sin and is right to PUNISH them. Tell them that despite that He sent His Son to die on their behalf and all we need to do to enjoy His grace is repent and OBEY. See how long they welcome you. This world hates us, some more than others, but all of it the same. We are not of this world and should not seek inclusion in it. We desire a oneness, we desire unity, but unity in Christ and oneness of Spirit. The kingdom of God is not one that exists on earth, at least not yet. The kingdom is not one we bring about, it is not one we help at all. God will do His work and we have the privilege of coming along for the ride. We do not seek a “better world” or a utopia, we seek Christ and Christ alone.

From the Article:

“The paradox in my spiritual journey is that beautiful people, ones who are overly kind, extravagantly generous, yet remain unassuming and humble — they threaten my faith and simultaneously save it. My faith, it teeters on again and off again, never secure, keeping me on my toes.

I will never stop being drawn outside of the faith circle, because selfish person that I am: I need to have all of the beauty. I can’t ever go back to the safe kind of faith, the one that is full of certainty and claims beauty only for itself. I want my faith to be fragile and vulnerable and dangerous, because without the risk of losing my faith, there would cease to be any need to save it.”

     The beauty she claimed to see outside, as if it only exists out there, is a facade. It's a remnant of the fact that as God's creation we can never be fully removed from the evidence of His work. I would ask why seeing people do good threatens her faith? Why does an atheist at a soup kitchen drive her to doubt? Is it because they're not a Christian? Is it because they're doing things she, for some reason, thought only Christians could do? The Bible tells us that all of our righteousnesses (apart from Him) are as filthy rags. It does not say we have no 'goodness', it only says that our 'goodness' is not ultimately good and by comparison is not very good at all. Frankly I'm concerned for her, with her faith so fragile as she says. We should not allow doubts to linger. When we doubt we need to use that doubt to drive us to deeper understanding. We need to strive for the death of doubts, not hold to them as some sort of indicator of higher truth. Our faith does not require saving. We do. I feel as if the author needs to be reminded that we hold to a faith that is sure in the storm, steady on the sea, and firm as a house built upon stone rather than sand. We cannot be led astray by the beauty of this world; a lost man can be confident but following him still gets you nowhere.

“For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning.”

(2 Peter 2:20)

On Messages and Mystics

     We need to be careful when we go demon hunting. As Christians we understand that the world we live in is fallen and at odds with the God we serve. We know that we can't simply trust what seems to be good and must be even more careful of the things that claim to be good. There is so much out there than will teach us wrongly or influence us in a negative way. However, not everything is actively backed by the powers of evil.

     Technically yes, everything that is not of God is part of the world system like a person still wired into the Matrix, but that doesn't mean that everything out there is intentionally trying to deceive and destroy our morals and beliefs. We need to be careful no to see demons in every shadow and monsters around every corner. To do that is to give the real enemy more power than he already has. It makes us paranoid and scared. We need to be aware of the dangers without obsessing over them and keep an eye out for enemies without focusing on them too much.

     One important aspect of this is perceiving and understanding the nature of the attack on God's good plan and purpose. We are Christians, and as such we actually hold to a very rational faith. Everything we believe makes logical sense. Even if we don't understand it all, God does. We need to remember that this is not a war of magic or mystery, it's a battle over ideas. The devil is a strong and powerful adversary but not because he wields God-like power. The devils tool -his only tool- is deception. He cannot create, he cannot control those who are saved, and he cannot simply make things happen, he can only talk. Grant it, he is quite good at it.

"You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do.

He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth,

because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources,

for he is a liar and the father of it.”

(John 8:44)

In scripture there are very few instances of anything miraculous happening due to the working of evil. Mostly we see this in the book of Revelation but even then it's as a part of the divine plan for the punishment of the earth.

“And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon,

out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.

For they are spirits of demons, performing signs,

which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world,

to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.”

(Revelation 16:13-14)

The point I'm trying to make here is that we are battling ideas and propositions not mystical leanings and dark magical influences. The devil can't slip some sort of evil signal into your mind and corrupt you without your knowledge. The corruption he can bring about is by convincing you that what you once thought was wrong is really alright.

     Remember Christian, that evil is not a force and sin is not a power, it's a choice. What we call evil is the willful decision to go against God. Objects and symbols and signs cannot be 'evil' because they have no will They can make no choices and can perform no actions. Remember that Jesus told us that we have sinned not when we've finally acted but when we've thought about it.

“You have heard that it was said to those of old,

'You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.'

"But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause

shall be in danger of the judgment.

And whoever says to his brother, 'Raca!' (worthless) shall be in danger of the council.

But whoever says, 'You fool!' shall be in danger of hell fire.

...

"You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not commit adultery.'

"But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her

has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

(Matthew 5:21-22, 27-28)

     Finally, lets not forget one very important fact. The unsaved people of this world are indeed enemies of God as the Bible says, but that doesn't mean that every one of them is actively and willfully trying to destroy others. Most people are just living their lives as best they can and doing all they can to ignore the truth of their own sinfulness. Most people are so used to deceiving themselves that they don't even realize the truth anymore. So I very much doubt there are many intentional conspiracies against God and Christianity, against goodness and morality. I think most people have simply come to believe a lie and are trying to defend what they see to be truth. Remember, only one man was ever born perfect and we were all saved from our sin.

“Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God?

Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals,

nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards,

nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.

And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified,

but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.”

(1 Corinthians 6:9-11)

     So please, don't waste your time looking for hidden symbols or subliminal messages luring us to evil or corrupting our minds. They're not and they can't. This another of the devil's clever smokescreens used to keep us chasing ghosts instead of focusing on the real problem. Men and women all around us are lost and there is only one way for them to be saved, the grace and salvation that comes from Jesus Christ.
